At Tauranga Girls’ College, we pride ourselves on being a vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural learning community. We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive. We are seeking a passionate, empathetic, and culturally responsive ESOL Inclusive Learning Assistant (Teacher Aide) to join our dedicated ESOL team and help our multilingual learners flourish. 

In this rewarding role, you will work closely with the ESOL team to support students for whom English is an additional language. Your primary focus will be helping students develop their English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) while ensuring they feel welcome, confident, and included in school life.

The Details on the Role:

This is a fixed term,  term-time only position, requiring 20.0 hours per week. The 20 hours can be worked either 4.0 hours per day, over five days a week. OR 5.0 hour per day worked over four days a week. 

This role will be graded on experience under the provisions of the Support Staff in Schools' Collective Agreement 2026-2028

The end date of the fixed term is 11 December 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • In-Class Support: Work alongside classroom teachers to assist ESOL students with daily lessons, adapting instructions to match their language proficiency.
  • Small Group & 1:1 Intervention: Deliver targeted English language activities and reading/writing interventions as directed by the ESOL Teacher.

  • Resource Preparation: Help create, modify, and organize visual aids, vocabulary cards, and other learning resources.

  • Cultural & Pastoral Care: Provide a welcoming environment that values students’ first languages and cultural backgrounds, helping them navigate the school environment.
  • Progress Tracking: Maintain brief notes on student engagement and progress to share with the teaching team.

Skills and Experience

What we are looking for:

  • Experience working in a school environment or holding a relevant qualification (e.g., TESOL certificate, Teacher Aide certificate) is an advantage, but a great attitude and willingness to learn are highly valued.
  • The Right Attitude: Patience, warmth, flexibility, and a genuine passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent spoken and written English, with the ability to explain concepts simply and clearly.

  • Cultural Empathy: An understanding of the challenges faced by language learners and families transitioning into a new school system.

  • Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and the wider learning support team.
